VIENNA, Austria -- The United States slumped to a 1-0 defeat in a friendly game at Austria on Tuesday, finishing its record-setting year with only its fourth loss from 23 matches. Jeremy Mathieu Jersey . Austria striker Marc Janko blasted the ball past goalkeeper Tim Howard in the 33rd minute, rounding off an attacking move started by David Alaba. The Austrian playmaker found the unmarked right back Gyorgy Garics, who set up Janko for his 16th career goal for Austria. It was the first goal against Howard in 453 minutes of play for his club Everton and the national team. Referee Istvan Vad denied the U.S. what may have been a goal in the 17th minute. A corner by Michael Bradley found Geoff Cameron, whose header was deflected by Marko Arnautovics arm. Austria goalkeeper Robert Almer punched the ball away from what appeared to be behind the goalline. "Its a friendly game, so Im not wanting to make a big deal out of it. But Im still asking why we are in 2013 and not have goal-line technology," U.S coach Jurgen Klinsmann said. "Its just a joke." The U.S. had team-record 16 victories in 2013 and qualified for the World Cup for a seventh time in succession. It was the eighth defeat in 44 matches under Klinsmann. "Disappointed in the result, but I think we played pretty well," U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard said before adding: "The year 2013 has been one of our best years ever." Austria failed to reach Brazil 2014 after being eliminated from a group won by Germany. The U.S. failed to score for a second straight match after being held to goalless draw by Scotland on Friday. The trip "was definitely worth it," Klinsmann said. "It was a good 10 days, good to see the players compete in training and these two games. You learn a lot about the guys when they are in a training camp." After an unimpressive opening 10 minutes in front of 20,200 spectators, Austria created two chances through Martin Harnik. The winger dribbled past DaMarcus Beasley coming in from the left wing but couldnt beat Howard at the near post. The next minute, Harniks quick move opened up the American defence but his cross didnt find Janko. The Americans responded with 20-meter efforts by Jozy Altidore, whose shot went wide, and Aron Johannsson, who forced keeper Robert Almer to a punching save. "Its been a fun ride, and its been amazing to be a part of watching this team grow from the loss to Honduras to how we picked ourselves up," Altidore said. "Its been inspiring." Harnik almost doubled the lead in the 49th with a curling shot past keeper Howard, though TV footage showed the winger was offside while collecting a pass by captain Christian Fuchs. The United States pressed for an equalizer, but Austria played deep in its own half and allowed hardly any space. "Over both wings we didnt create enough chances," Klinsmann said. Altidore came closest but his low shot in the 74th was saved by Almer, and he sent a free kick wide in the closing minute. "It was important to keep a clean sheet and to score a goal," Austria coach Koller said. "We were playing a top-13 team and you see they played some good football. They definitely had chances but you cant win if you dont score from them." Koller took his team to a seven-day training camp in Alicante, Spain, last week in order to test some tactical variations. He changed his team in several positions, giving defender Martin Hinteregger and attacking midfielder Lukas Hinterseer a place in the starting lineup for their first games for Austria. Aleix Vidal Barcelona Jersey . While hell be dialed in to that tournament on a course he loves, you can forgive him if his eyes glance down the calendar just a bit, towards April. Sergi Roberto Jersey . Anthony Davis had 31 points and 17 rebounds in his seventh straight game with more than 20 points, but that was only enough to keep the Pelicans competitive into the final minutes. Andrew Bogut had 10 points and 15 rebounds for Golden State, which rebounded from a loss a night earlier in Oklahoma City and snapped a two-game skid. http://www.barcelonafcteamshop.com/Auth ... vo-Jersey/ . Halladay signed a one-day contract with the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday that allowed the veteran right-hander to retire as a member of team with which he broke into the majors and spent the bulk of his distinguished 16-year career.Flushing Meadows, NY (Sports Network) - World No. 1 and four-time U.S. Open titlist Serena Williams breezed past Yaroslava Shvedova 6-3, 6-1 on Friday to move into the fourth round at the U.S. Open. The reigning U.S. and French Open champ Williams, a 16-time Grand Slam winner, needed just over an hour to dispose of Shvedova in straight sets on the hardcourts at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Williams, who defeated Victoria Azarenka in last years outstanding final in Flushing, will take on fellow American Sloane Stephens in the round of 16 after the 15th-seeded Stephens downed No. 23 Jamie Hampton 6-1, 6-3. The Aussie Open semifinalist Stephens is now an impressive 15-3 at the Slams this year. A pair of top-five seeds -- Agnieszka Radwanska and Li Na -- also moved into the fourth round at the U.S. Open on Friday. The third-seeded 2012 Wimbledon runner-up Radwanska topped 32nd-seeded Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-4, 7-6 (7-1), while the fifth-seeded former French Open champion and two-time Australian Open runner-up Li popped 11 aces in taking care of 30th-seeded 19-year-old British left-hander Laura Robson 6-2, 7-5. Li avenged a third-round loss against Robson at last years U.S. Open. "I was really happy how I was hitting on the court," Li said. "And I thought I served really well." Robson, who piled up 30 unforced errors on a sunny Day 5, was the first British woman to be seeded at a Grand Slam event since Jo Durie at the 1987 Australian Open. Last months Wimbledoon semifinalist Radwanska is seeking her first-ever trip into a U. Marc-Andre Ter Stegen Jersey. S. Open quarterfinal, while the 31-year-old Li reached her lone quarterfinal in New York City four years ago. Nine-time Grand Slam winner Martina Hingis, who was named to the International Tennis Hall of Fame in July, made her first Grand Slam appearance since returning from retirement by pairing with Czech Daniel Hantuchova for a doubles match against Italys Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci. However, Hingis and Hantuchova were no match for the Italians, who earned a 6-3, 7-5 victory to advance. Hingis later returned for a mixed doubles match with Indias Mahesh Bhupathi against Swedens Robert Lindstedt and Taiwans Chan Yung-January, but Hingis and Bhupathi were handed a 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5) setback. Eight-seeded Angelique Kerber of Germany cruised past 25th-seeded Kaia Kanepi of Estonia 6-0, 6-4, while 18th-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro notched a 6-2, 6-4 triumph over Chinas Zheng Jie. Ninth-seeded former world No. 1 Jelena Jankovic reached the round of 16 with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) victory over Japans Kurumi Nara. Jankovic was the 2008 U.S. Open runner-up and will battle Li in a quality fourth-round matchup here on Sunday. Meanwhile, 24th-seeded Russian Ekaterina Makarova sent 16th-seeded Wimbledon runner-up Sabine Lisicki packing in 6-4, 7-5 fashion. The German slugger Lisicki has never advanced beyond the fourth round in Flushing. Makarova will face Radwanska on Sunday in her first-ever fourth-round match at the U.S. Open.
