VANCOUVER -- Kara Langs triumphant return to the pitch is still a work in progress. Patric Hornqvist Penguins Jersey Authentic . Nine months after the former Canadian soccer star launched a remarkable comeback effort from a seemingly career-ending knee injury, the 27-year-old has been named to Canadas roster for Sundays friendly against Mexico in Vancouver. But head coach John Herdman said on a conference call Wednesday that Lang still has work to do on her rehabilitation and isnt ready to play yet. "Karas part of a long-term process," Herdman said. "Weve been working fantastically with B2ten (a fundraising organization for Canadian athletes) on a rebuilding process with Kara -- literally rebuilding her functional movements from scratch. "Part of the process is getting her immersed with this team. ... A big part of her being on this roster is that shes going to get an experience in BC Place, which will be the stadium that hosts the final of the Womens World Cup." Herdman said the team is targeting a return to action for Lang in the first quarter of 2014. He said Lang isnt participating in any scrimmages in training at this point. "Look, the reality is we could put her in, but the big challenge for Kara is shes been brought back too quickly too soon in the past which has led to this consistent breakdown," Herdman said. "If you think about rebuilding a car, weve literally, through B2ten, rebuilt certain parts of Kara to help her become more efficient as an athlete so she doesnt keep breaking down with the same issues." The fact that Lang is on the roster at is huge for a player whos career was essentially over. The Mexico match comes nearly three years after two torn ACLs forced Lang to walk away from the game, tearfully announcing her retirement at a news conference in her hometown of Oakville. Veteran striker Josee Belanger is also returning to the national team after more than two years away with an ankle injury, but Herdman said she suffered a setback in training is not yet fit for game duty. "Josee came in, had a fantastic start to our training, beat three players, scored a goal and went off injured," Herdman said. "That was her first return back to Canada Soccers training environment. "Josee is going to be out for a period of time now. Its more precautionary, just to help rebuild a player that hasnt been playing at this level for at least two years." Both Belanger, a Sherbrooke, Que., native, and Lang were key players Canadas 2010 CONCACAF victory before being sidelined by injuries. Lang is Canadas second all-time active goal scorer, with 34 goals. She played in two womens World Cups, in 2003 and 2007, as well as the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Eighteen of the players 23 players named to the roster were part of Canadas 3-0 victory over South Korea in Edmonton last month, including Sura Yekka, a 16-year-old defender from Mississauga, Ont., who earned her first senior team call-up for that game. Rachel Melhado, a 20-year-old defender who plays for University of Louisville, will take part in her second senior camp. Her previous games for Canada include a 1-0 loss to Germany last June. Shes also played for Canadas under-18 and U20 squads. The game marks Canadas first in Vancouver and the first versus Mexico since a 3-1 Canadian win at the CONCACAF qualifying tournament in January of 2012 that secured Canadas spot in the London Olympics. "Theres a healthy rivalry with Mexico and I know they will be ready for this game," Herdman said. "Well be diligent with our work as well as keep focused on our goals leading into 2015. .J. -- Josh Cribbs was in the Pro Bowl in February and out of a job six months later. On February 9, 2014, Michael Sam publicly declared he was a homosexual. The Missouri Tigers Defensive End and SEC Defensive player of the year is eligible for the upcoming NFL draft in May. The watershed announcement gives rise to a bit of a legal minefield and the league and teams will look to ensure that no lines are crossed. Lets break it down. Does the NFL have any rules any place protecting homosexuals from discrimination? They do have protection for homosexual players, although it wont apply unless Sam gets drafted. Article 49 of the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement provides that you cant discriminate against a player on the basis of "race, religion, national origin" or "sexual orientation". The reference to "sexual orientation" is brand new in the CBA, and the other 3 major sports also have a similar provision. Heres the catch: the CBA wont apply to Sam if hes not drafted. While the CBA provides that it covers all "present and future" players, it still restricts that player pool to drafted rookies or undrafted players who are negotiating with a team. If undrafted, Sam wouldnt qualify as either type of player. So that means if Sam goes undrafted, the NFL CBA wont apply to him. Is that it? Is there nothing else protecting a player like Sam? There is, but its not perfect. Theres no federal law prohibiting discrimination based upon sexual orientation. The existence of such a law would be ideal for Sam since it wouldnt matter where he would end playing since a federal law covers the entire country. There are laws at the state level, although not every state has them. In all, 21 states have laws on the books that prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation in the context of private employers. So that shakes out to 27 of the 32 NFL teams being the subject of gay employment protection laws. So which teams are in states where there arent state or other local laws protecting gay people? The five teams are as follows: Carolina Panthers, Jacksonville Jaguars, Houston Texans, Arizona Cardinals and Tennesseee Titans. Rob Scuderi Penguins Jersey Authentic. Heres the big question: if Michael Sam is not drafted, can he sue and win? Indeed, that is the big question. Sam is projected to be a mid to late round pick. In order to be successful in a lawsuit against the league he will need to show that he was not drafted because he is a homosexual. That can be tough in the context of a draft – even if it is true. We have seen the draft stock of players inexplicably drop in all the sports. We routinely see players drafted a lot later (or earlier) than projected. Apart from the top prospects, drafts can be highly unpredictable. Indeed, drafts are complicated beasts and it can be hard to show that a player wasnt drafted simply because he is gay. To have a shot at winning a lawsuit, Sam would need strong evidence supporting his case. He would be looking for things like incriminating statements or emails that provide that a team conspired not to draft Sam because of his sexuality. That may not be easy to find. Teams may pass on Sam because he is gay, but just never say it. Ultimately, Sam would need a smoking gun, and absent that he would have a tough time winning a lawsuit. Do you think teams will take a pass on Sam because hes gay? Reason would suggest that some teams may shy away from Sam because he is gay. From a philosophical standpoint, some executives may not be comfortable with the idea of a gay player. Other teams may not have an issue with his sexuality, but may still take a pass because they fear he will become a distraction. Indeed, we have already heard anonymous executives express this sentiment. While some may believe he could become a distraction, and by extension adversely affect his team, it seems unlikely to be the case. The NFL is filled with real and legitimate distractions: DUIs, domestic violence, vehicular manslaughter, murder and whatever Dez Bryant did last Sunday. None of these events have led to the downfall of a team or the demise of the league. And most certainly something as innocuous and irrelevant as a players sexuality wont become a problem.
