Can Ben Roethlisberger resist Antonio Brown?

Ben Roethlisberger was blunt in saying that the blame for the offenses slow start had to be pinned on him. He mentioned a variety of reasons for his play but specifically said that at times he may zone in on Antonio Brown too often. While Brown is the closest player to the game Madden, where you can get away with throwing to one player on every play, the team needs to be able to rely on others. No matter how tempting it may be, Roethlisberger has to lay off of Brown.
Can Ben Roethlisberger resist Antonio Brown?
It is going to be a tough task. Brown is almost always the safer bet. On 36 attempts Roethlisberger is a 72-percent passer when going Brown’s way. The two have connected for 354 yards, 9.8 yards per attempt.
When attempting anybody else, he is a 58-percent passer on 74 attempts. They have connected on 387 yards, 5.2 yards per carry. You may ask if Brown is so much more efficient, why would Roethlisberger waste his time trying to get the others to keep up?
The Steelers have been able to get by with this offense, but this is not a recipe for long-term success. Think back to the AFC Championship, when the Patriots dared the Steelers to throw the ball to anybody but Antonio Brown and it led to Roethlisberger being 4-10 throwing to Cobi Hamilton and Sammie Coates. You cannot be one dimensional or predictable, even if it seems successful at the time.
In Week four, the Baltimore Ravens have the most dynamic and versatile secondary that they will have seen this season by a long shot. It will be the first time that this team is able to put extra safety attention on Brown without any real fear of being exposed anywhere else. This is not the Bears or Browns secondaries. This is not even the Vikings with two big names and two big question marks. This is a complete secondary, and if Roethlisberger cannot prove that he can complete passes to his other options they are going to find ways to shut down the passing game.
For players such as Martavis Bryant and JuJu Smith-Schuster, it is just going to take timing without much experience and in making up for lost time in the case of Bryant. Finding these two will get more limited players such as Eli Rogers and Jesse James open in space more. Against a strong secondary, can Ben Roethlisberger find a way to spread the ball around effectively?
