Sunday's draw with Celta Vigo left Real Madrid 16 points adrift of league leaders, Barcelona, meaning the club are looking at an incredibly difficult challenge to defend their crown. The points gap is so vast that few see a scenario where Zinedine Zidane's charges turn things around, however, there are 16 factors which help explain just why the two teams have gone down differing paths this term.
1. Ter Stegen vs Keylor

The two goalkeepers have lived through polar opposite campaigns; the German stopper is a candidate to win the แทงบอล Zamora trophy and is fairly placed among the best in his position in world football. Keylor Navas has shown inconsistency, mainly due to his numerous injury absences, whilst Zidane continues to defend the Costa Rican as the club look to Kepa. Marc-Andre ter Stegen has conceded just seven goals at an average at 0.39 per match, Navas on the other hand has conceded 10; an average of one แทงบอล per match.
2. Central problem or solution

Real Madrid have been rocked by the repeated absences of Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane, which has left Nacho Fernandez as the most used central defender this season. Jesus Vallejo has barely played LaLiga football this term, but for Barcelona the situation has been rather different. Gerard Pique and Samuel Umtiti formed a strong partnership until the Frenchman's injury, though Javier Mascherano performed well at times and Thomas Vermaelen has stepped in confidently of late.
3. Benefits and full-back concerns

The contrasting fortunes of Marcelo and Jordi Alba mirror those of their respective clubs. The Spaniard has struck an impressive partnership with Lionel Messi and is playing well regularly; Marcelo has struggled since his injury layoff and has seen mistakes creep into his game. The most recent came against Celta Vigo as Los Blancos conceded a second goal. When you add Dani Carvajal and Achraf Hakimi, Real Madrid's full-backs have contributed just one assist. Nelson Semedo and Sergi Roberto have added 11 along with Alba.
4. The contribution of the 'B team'

Barcelona have found their rotation players have helped them win matches this season. The victory over Getafe saw both Denis Suarez and Paulinho score, and against Sevilla, Paco Alcacer scored a brace. Gerard Deulofeu contributed well at the beginning of the season and Vermaelen has performed admirably in Umtiti's aforementioned absence. The 2016/17 season saw Real Madrid find exceptional success through their rotation of players; unfortunately the quality hasn't been present this term, and only Dani Ceballos has been decisive with his goals against Deportivo Alaves.
5. Zidane and Valverde

Ernesto Valverde has been the tranquil face of a Blaugrana that is strolling towards the LaLiga title. Whilst not the most exciting appointment in the summer, he has excelled in the role, especially when you consider the dismal position the club were in following Neymar's departure. Zidane's a complete contrast; he appears angry and has publicly denied the club's interest in Kepa. The Frenchman seems unable to find a solution to a team on a slide.
6. Striker question marks

Karim Benzema has scored two goals, Cristiano Ronaldo has four and Gareth Bale has also netted four times. Lionel Messi on the other hand has scored 16 league goals, Luis Suarez has 11. The Barcelona forwards have been incredibly productive, helping the club to their total of 48 goals this term; Los Blancos have only managed 32 in comparison.
7. Messi and Cristiano

While Ronaldo has lifted his fifth Ballon d'Or, his domestic season has been a far cry from what we've come to expect from the Portuguese star. Suspension saw him miss the first four matches of the campaign and he never rediscovered his rhythm. He's only scored four goals in 13 matches, and he failed to find the net in the important fixture against Los Cules. Messi's campaign has been of an exceptional standard.
8. Contributions from the new signings

Zidane is uneasy about new signings, however he doesn't appear to trust those made in the summer. Against Celta Vigo on Sunday none of them played, whilst Valverde has found a way to get the very best out of his new acquisitions. Semedo and Paulinho have both settled into the first team at the Camp Nou whilst Ousmane Dembele and Coutinho are essentially starting from the same point.
9. The engine room

One of Real Madrid's major problems is their midfield, the heartbeat of a football team. Luka Modric and Toni Kroos have not got close to the levels they showed in the 2016/17 campaign. It may be a matter of fatigue but the pair are really struggling. In Catalonia it has been another story entirely, Sergio Busquets has returned to his best and Andres Iniesta has performed well in-between injury absences.
10. Hunger

Alvaro Benito described it best; "Real Madrid has to recover the hunger and spirit of a team that hasn't won a single trophy." Perhaps after winning both the Champions League and LaLiga the team has lost their motivation, and are experiencing a period of difficulty reminiscent to that of Jose Mourinho's Los Blancos after their record breaking title win.
11. Absences not felt

Barcelona have lost Umtiti recently and haven't felt it, neither did they when Sergi Roberto, Jordi Alba or Luis Suarez were injured. Ousmane Dembele's long-term layoff also hasn't hindered the team in an attacking sense. Real Madrid on the other hand have missed Ronaldo significantly, just as they have Bale and Carvajal. When Ramos has been suspended or injured, the team have lost all their defensive shape.
12. Bernabeu vs Camp Nou

Barcelona have won all but one of their home matches, and the famous stadium has become a fortress once more. Real Madrid have struggled at home and have managed to win just five out of their nine home matches in the league.
13. With and without melancholy

Ronaldo himself stated that the team were strong before the departures of Alvaro Morata, Pepe and James Rodriguez. Vallejo isn't yet at the requisite level to replace the Portuguese defender whilst the goals of Morata and James haven't been replaced. Only Neymar left the Catalan giants in the summer and his contributions haven't yet been missed.
14. Supporters

Barcelona have seen attendances dwindle during this season, although many suspect this is due to the ongoing Catalan independence battle. Irrespective of that, the club have still felt the unconditional support of those within the stadium on a match-day. At the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu the mood hasn't been as pleasant; fans have whistled an underperforming Benzema and have piled further pressure on a team low on confidence.
15. El Clasico

In the Clasico before Christmas, the defending champions had an opportunity to cut the gap between the two teams and essentially gain a six point swing. After their 3-0 victory, it was Barcelona who benefited. If the hosts had won the gap won have been down to 8 points, but with a defeat it went to a likely unassailable 14.
16. One game less
Due to their participation in the Club World Cup, Real Madrid have played one match less than their fierce rivals. Had that match been played then it is possible that the gap would be 13 or 14 points.
