Giants vs. Cowboys: 5 questions

White Dalvin Tomlinson Jerseys , answers about Dallas It is entirely possible that Dave Halprin of Blogging The Boys and I have done more “5 questions” segments than any two writers elsewhere on SB Nation. We have been doing two per year ever since I started this site back in 2007. With the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys facing off Sunday night it’s time for the latest installment of the long-running “Ed and Dave trade questions” series.Ed: It’s easy to overreact after one week, but how concerned are you about the Dallas offense after it scored just 8 points in the season-opener?Dave: Very concerned. It’s not just week 1, the Cowboys offense has bogged down since the middle of last season. The offensive line has not played up to its reputation and they are missing Travis Frederick for the foreseeable future. There are definitely issues up front as they are starting a rookie left guard, Connor Williams, who had some problems in Week 1 (although it was against Kawaan Short who can give anyone fits). The offensive line has to improve its play, even All-Pro Tyron Smith had a very poor game last week. The other issue is Dak Prescott. After tearing through the league his first 24 games (except against the Giants!), his last nine games have been bad. We wrote some of last year off to injury to Tyron Smith and the suspension of Ezekiel Elliott, but Week 1 was a very poor performance by Prescott. He is the central figure in all of this and it’s up to him to return to the QB who gave us such high hopes in the first 1 and 1/2 seasons, instead of what we’ve seen the last half of a season in 2017 and what we saw in Week 1. Ed: What was your reaction to the whole “Dez Bryant and Jerry Jones together at the Beyonce concert” hullabaloo?Dave: No reaction at all. Dez isn’t coming back to Dallas, so it was irrelevant. Ed: Is there one matchup where you absolutely think the Cowboys have an advantage on Sunday?Dave: DeMarcus Lawrence on Ereck Flowers, and generally the Cowboys defensive line versus the Giants offensive line. I saw some of the Giants game against Jacksonville last week and Flowers just looked terrible. That follows his generally poor work in his career, so you kind of think that’s just who the guy is. On the other hand, DeMarcus Lawrence has turned into a terror as a pass rusher and he also plays the run very well. After a breakout season last year, he followed it up with an excellent Week 1 versus Carolina Dalvin Tomlinson Jerseys 2019 , he had a sack, a fumble recovery, made tackles in the run game and was generally disruptive. He has help, too. The Cowboys defensive line has become a disruptive force and if Randy Gregory can play after a concussion in Week 1, that just adds more firepower. This is where the Cowboys should have an advantage.Ed: Is there one matchup where you absolutely believe the Giants have an advantage?Dave: The Giants pass receivers against the Cowboys linebackers and secondary. Any team that has Odell Beckham already has a mismatch. When you add in players like Sterling Shepard and Evan Engram, that’s a threat. Plus, the Giants could work Saquon Barkley into the pass catching equation. The Cowboys linebackers and secondary are not bad in pass coverage. In fact, last week they played really well, but the Panthers don’t have the playmakers that the Giants do, especially after Greg Olsen was injured. The Cowboys secondary is young and not very deep, so if the Giants can give Eli Manning some time, they may be able to work some magic in the passing game. Ed: You knew this one was coming. I know you would take Odell Beckham and put him in your lineup. But, he’s off the table. If you could take one Giant OTHER THAN BECKHAM and add him to the Cowboys’ roster, who would it be?Dave: I got a few candidates in mind. Olivier Vernon is always a possibility but the Cowboys have some firepower along the defensive line. Saquon Barkley would always be a possibility White Wayne Gallman Jerseys , but with Zeke in the line up, running back is not a need. The Cowboys could use a boost in the pass receiving arena, and where they are really deficient is at tight end. So maybe Evan Engram would be a good pass-catching tight end option. But in the end, I think I’d take Landon Collins. The Cowboys are very thin at safety and were sort of chasing Earl Thomas this offseason, so we’ll just go ahead and get a play-making safety in Collins. Ben Banogu blew up the combine. Was it enough to put him on the Giants’ radar?"WhiteFanposts Fanshots Sections New York Giants NewsGiants Training Camp 2016Giants vs. Eagles 2015, Week 172019 NFL DraftThe Giants should take a close look at TCU EDGE Ben BanoguNew,9commentsBen Banogu blew up the combine. It’s a saying that would be cliche if it weren’t also so true. The best defenses don’t just rely on one “ace” to get pressure on the quarterback, but have waves of talented athletes they can use to overwhelm offenses. And given how far ahead of defenses offenses are, and continue to be as more college concepts are incorporated into NFL schemes. The New York Giants need to improve both the front and back ends of their pass rush, secondary and pass rushers. Part of that could be adding a top-shelf pass rusher in the draft, but they could look to double-dip at the position or they might be forced to wait until later in the draft. In either case, the Giants might want to take a close look at TCU edge rusher Ben Banogu.MeasurablesProsGood height, weight, and length for the position. Productive player Wayne Gallman Jerseys 2019 , among the top of the draft class in quarterback hits and pressures (32.5 TFL and 17.0 sacks at TCU) Flashes excellent quickness and burst in the right situations.Good use of inside moves when the B-gap opens.Disciplined as a run defender. Has the strength to stand up blockers.ConsNeeds to be more aggressive taking on blockers. Too often content to catch and hold linemen. Doesn’t show the burst off the line you would expect. Can struggle to disengage from blockers. Doesn’t show his athleticism often enough.Numbers Of NoteStatistics from Dan PizzutaPer Sports Info Solutions, Banogu had 63 pressures during the 2018 season which was third in this draft class behind Josh Allen and Brian Burns. He also had 30 quarterback hits, which was tied with Allen for the most in this classHis 21.5 run stuffs, per Football Study Hall, were seventh in this EDGE classBanogu also killed the Combine with a 134” broad jump (first among EDGE, eighth among all prospects) and 40” vertical (first among EDGE).At 109.7, Banogu’s Speed Score (a weight-adjusted 40 with 100 as average) was sixth in this class. He came in as the most athletic EDGE at the Combine, per SPARQ (a composite testing score) in the 97th percentile among NFL edge rushers. Prospect VideoWhat They’re Saying - Lance Zierlein (NFL.com - Scouting Report) Does He Fit The Giants?Ben Banogu would be a good fit for the Giants’ scheme. He has the versatility to line up in a two or three-point stance depending on down, distance, or subpackage, and he has the athletic upside to be a dynamic rusher. However, he has some concerns on the field which will need to be investigated by scouts and coaches. Namely, if he tested as one of the most explosively athletic EDGE players in the NFL, why didn’t he play that way? Banogu flashed the kind of burst and movement skills of which he was capable White Sterling Shepard Jerseys , but the flashes generally only came on stunts, twists, or when closing. If he was coached to be highly disciplined, almost over-cautious, and avoid over-running quarterbacks in a wide-open Big 12, that’s one thing. However, the disconnect between his obvious athleticism and the way he plays many reps is occasionally confusing. And even so, he was productive at TCU, and flashed what we saw on the field at the Combine. Banogu would certainly be an intriguing add as a developmental player with the team just using him in situations where he only has to worry about rushing the passer. Assuming his Combine workout hasn’t pushed him out of the mid-rounds, Banogu could be a useful player with high upside if the team can unlock that athletic potential.
